Toronto Masque Theatre is offering a wonderful opportunity for students to attend a matinee dress rehearsal of the Masques of Orpheus at the Enwave Theatre at Harbourfront. In this double bill, we tell the classic tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, a story of love, death and art, with music (a period-instrument ensemble), song (8 voices), and dance (3 dancers).

This open rehearsal is ideal for students of classics, music, dance and drama. It will delight enquiring minds, and the two contrasting halves, one baroque, one contemporary, are certain to spark lively discussion in your classes.

Please read the flyer and order form below (in pdf format) for more details. The deadline for registration is March 11th, 2011. Apply soon for early receipt of your study guide, which is included with the cost of admission.

Masques of Orpheus

A tale of love, death and the transforming power of art, told twice in
Dance, Drama & Music.

THEN

NOW

1686: BAROQUE

La Descente d'Orphée aux Enfers (1686) by Marc-Antoine Charpentier is a chamber opera telling of the young poet and musician, Orpheus, who plays and sings so sweetly that the very trees bend to hear him. The stern gods of the underworld are touched by his plea to release his wife, Eurydice, to a second life. Based on Ovid's telling of the myth in his Metamorphoses. Includes formal Baroque dance.

2003: CONTEMPORARY

Orpheus and Eurydice (2003) by Canadians James Rolfe (music) and André Alexis (text) is a fresh and touching retelling of the same myth. What does this story mean to us today? And does it touch us more or differently when told with contemporary music, words, and dance?
